BROWSER WARS: In a bold move, Google announced it is releasing its own Web Browser today, in an attempt to muscle in on Microsoft’s dominance in this market with Internet Explorer.

The new “free” browser, called “Chrome,” is supposed to be available for downloading Tuesday in more than 100 countries for computers running on Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Google said it’s still working on versions compatible with Apple Inc.’s Mac and the Linux operating system.
Chrome is going to compete head to head with Internet Exlorer which controls about 75 percent of the market.
Search Engine giant Google wants to control as much of the Internet Experience as possible. This is understandable from a company perspective, but at the same time a little scary, that one company has so much power. Do I really want Big “G” to know everything I do on the Internet?
Google has been battling with Microsoft for years over Internet Dominance. Microsoft has been trying to create it’s own Search Engine, and has even attempted to buy Yahoo. So who will win in the Browser wars… Ultimately the consumers will decide what they like.
In a blog posting yesterday, Google touted Chrome as a more sophisticated Web browser better suited for displaying the more dynamic and interactive content blossoming on the Web as people migrate from television, radio and newspapers.
“The Web gets better with more options and innovation,” Sundar Pichai, Google’s vice president of product management, and Linus Upson, Google’s engineering director, wrote in the posting. “Google Chrome is another option, and we hope it contributes to making the Web even better.”
Features include:
- Tabbed browsing where each tab gets its own process, leading to faster and more stable browsing. If one tab crashes, the whole browser doesn’t go down with it
- A distinct user interface that places tabs on top of the browser window instead of right below the address bar
- An “incognito” mode that lets you browse the web in complete privacy because it doesn’t record any of your activity
- A new JavaScript engine built from the ground up for speed
- Malware and phishing lists that automatically update themselves and warn you of bad websites
- A default homepage that displays your most commonly used sites and other personalized information
Google Chrome Browser
So what does this mean for the Internet Marketing community? Competition brings Innovation, and this is good for everyone.
Knowing Google, the browser should be great! Good luck with it “G” - Although I personally use Fire Fox (The Old Netscape Company), I’ll be giving it a try!

Google’s Chrome is aimed at Windows, not IE
This is no longer about browser but about the an entire marketplace spread between desktop, mobile and web. With Chrome, Google’s taking a shot at Windows, not paltry Internet Explorer
I’ve covered this in more detail on my blog

despite the rumors, i’m finding Chrome’s speed to be inconsistent; it seems to alternate between going lightning fast and then hanging for no apparent reason…

A lot of people use IE because they don’t know better, don’t care enough to change, or they have to for work. Chrome won’t influence them. What Chrome will influence is:
- Firefox users
- the upcoming mobile browser battle
Those two targets are very important for Google and, ultimately, winnable.
